Tasamuh Periodical

The Tasamuh quarterly is an independent periodical dedicated to debates on tolerance and human rights issues in Palestine and the Arab region. It seeks to disseminate a contemporary illuminated culture through its assertion on the values of human rights and tolerance. It also tries to consider the current socio-political situation and to evaluate its impact on the reality of tolerance within the community.

Professor Iyad Barghouti, the General Director of Ramallah Center for Human Rights Studies is the chief editor of Tasamuh periodical.

It includes four sections: studies and articles, reports, laws and legislations and culture. The reports section focuses on different human issues that all defend people's rights in practicing their freedoms. This is done through publishing reports that expose specific occurrences or research findings in the Arab world and discuss their impact on the state of tolerance. The laws and legislations section discusses subjects –not only theories- based on scientific research mainly related to human rights in the Arab societies. The cultural section consists of an essay on tolerance in the thought of an Arab or foreign intellectuals. This aims at demonstrating this noble concept as an ideology and as a practice.

Four issues of Tasamuh are published each year. The first issue was published in December 2003. Its content's language is Arabic. It is open to researchers, writers, academics and all interested people to contribute.

We accept contributions on the following conditions:

  1. The article should not have been published previously;
  2. The article should follow scientific procedures commonly used for publications;
  3. The article should be typed and proof-read;
  4. The article should be either a study, an opinion, a research paper, a report or a book-review linked to Tasamuh's subjects of interest.
  5. The word count should not exceed 6000 words for research papers or studies, 3000-5000 for articles and 2000-3000 for reports and book reviews.
  6. Tasamuh is free to publish submitted contributions or and is not obliged to return all received materials.

Writers of Tasamuh

In addition to Palestinian writers, Tasamuh is also open to writers from the whole Arab world as well as to writers from the Diaspora. For example, recent issues included materials written by authors from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Jordan as well as Arab writers living in France and UK.

Furthermore, RCHRS encourages women to take their part in publishing articles that raise their interests and concerns. Recently, in Gaza, a number of women writers have published some articles which is considered exceptional for such conservative society as the Gazan one.
In addition, RCHRS strives to encourage young male and female writers to take up writing. Also it encourages young writers and researchers who are already involved in RCHRS activities and training courses, to contribute. In 2009, RCHRS published a special issue that included papers all prepared by university students who were involved in "Towards Ideological and Political Tolerance among university students" project.

Journal Distribution

Tasamuh journal has become one of the most demanded journals for local libraries, academic and cultural institutions. Therefore, RCHRS has adopted a new strategy in distributing it to ensure that all districts in the West Bank are covered.

Currently, Tasamuh journal reaches libraries of all districts, interested ministries, university libraries and civil society organizations, RCHRS' participating groups and all interested sides and persons. In the case of Gaza and due to the Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip, RCHRS has made a deal with a trade firm to transfer around 200 copies of each issue.

Furthermore, RCHRS has been distributing some copies of Tasamuh to Arab countries such as Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.
